Description
A Baule Comb Ivory Coast, 19th to early 20th century Hardwood with black patina. Janus-headed, one with single braided beard and scarification marks on lower cheeks, the other with double braided beard. Both with similar hairstyles canted to the left, a comb inserted on proper right. Fine incised geometric designs on disk at top and shoulders. In very good condition, wear and polish from use, traces of white pigment on once side. With a metal stand. Provenance: A Private Collection, Santa Fe, NM Ex Belgian family collection Note: An offering tray from collection of Baudouin de Grunne, Brussels, features a similar Baule head with beard, also framed by a finely incised circular disc, as published in Parcours des Mondes, Paris, 2020, page 24. Height: 8 ¾ inches
