Mabel May Woodward, painter, craftswoman, impressionist, was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 28th, 1877. Miss Woodward first studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and later studied at The Art Students' League in New York under Frank Vincent Du Mond, Kenyon Cox, and William Merritt Chase. She also studied under Arthur Wesley Dow and Charles H. Woodbury at the Ogunquit School of Art. After completing her art studies, Miss Woodward taught for many years at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she originated what was known as the action class. The distinguishing feature of this class was the studying of the human figure as a machine rather than a stationary object. In her own paintings, however, repose rather than movement is dominant and she is more involved in light and color. Miss Woodward made three trips to Europe, painting in Italy, France, Sicily, Switzerland, Holland and England. She painted extensively in the New England states as well as in Arizona, New Mexico, California, South Carolina, Florida, Texas and Bermuda. Besides regularly exhibiting in the exhibitions of the Providence Art Club and the Providence Water Color Club, Miss Woodward had canvases hung at the National Academy, Chicago Art Institute and the Boston and Rockport Art Clubs.
