Item Details
Description

Interesting and rarely seen German diving helmet bonnet. This bonnet is a four-light three-bolt model (four windows and three neck ring bolts) in a style of construction favored by German manufacturers. With the lack of a manufacturers name, we are making an educated assumption this helmet was made by either FR. Flohr or Hagenuk, both German helmet makers.

This helmet bonnet features some unique characteristics used by FR. Flohr and Hagenuk. Most noticeable is the unique exhaust style followed by the air elbow placement, left side bulge, top window guard style, the four light configuration, plus more. This example never had a handle on the top, which Hagenuk helmets many times featured. Bonnet weighs 30 pounds.

A significant detail found on the neck ring is a Royal Danish inspection stamp and helmet serial number. The number is either 1818 or 118. Various German helmets were used by the Danish Navy and featured this stamp.

At some point in the history of the helmet, the faceplate threads were worn down almost flat. Luckily the faceplate was not discarded! The faceplate was secured to the bonnet via a crude bolt and wing nut on the left that goes through the copper body. There is a hinge on the right side. The hinge is not secured to the faceplate but is simply holding it in place. The hinge is attached to the helmet via a metal block connected via two screws to the copper body. The faceplate can be removed quite easily. The female threads on the bonnet are in good condition. If a correct replacement faceplate were installed, the old modifications could be repaired, giving the helmet back its original appearance.

The faceplate does have an acrylic window. The three other windows are heavy glass. The top window glass is cracked in multiple spots but is still solid. The top of the bonnet does feature some typical working dents. The air fitting on the back is pushed slightly in and is making contact with the copper body. Inside the bonnet, the original air vents are present and in good condition. The helmet has a nice patina. With a proper breastplate and some repairs, this rarely seen German helmet would be a magnificent addition to any collection!
