Description
This period framed French engraving of The Marquis de Lafayette depicts the Lafayette at the Revolutionary War Battle of Yorktown with his manservant Amistead at his side.Armistead served as a Yankee spy who would as a runaway slave who would infiltrate British camps and spy for Lafayette.After the war, Amistead was returned into slavery. Upon hearing this, Lafayette had him set free in 1787, for his friendship gratitude and service and Amended Amistead's last name to Layette.This engraving is from a painting by Jean Baptiste Le Paron and engraved by Noel Le Mar. Circa 1820 it is in Good Condition, slight foxing to the right margin of image and in its original frame, it measures 24.5" tall X 19" across.
