Ancient Seas, Morocco, Alnif, Hamar Laghdad Formation, Devonian Period, ca. 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago. A wonderful, fossilized trilobite of the Acastidae family known as philonyx. The spines and eye lobes are beautifully preserved; note the texture on the eye facets! This prehistoric "sea bug" certainly looks like Hollywood’s rendering of extra-terrestrials. The preparation on this trilobite gives the impression that this prehistoric creature is actively patrolling the ocean floor, much in the way they would have traveled. The fossilized trilobite contrasts nicely with the lighter hues of the stone matrix in which it is encased. The large spines on this species may have helped protect the underbelly when enrolled in a protective ball. A wonderful presentation of one of the more menacing looking trilobite species! Restoration and infill to trilobite, protruding spines are reattached and infill to gaps. Approximately 90% original trilobite material. Great preservation to spines and eye facets.
