Description
Western Europe, Germany, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A lengthy iron knife blade with a thick tang known as a bauernwehr. This type of large knife may have been used for hunting or utilitarian purposes and has a rivet known as a nagel. The nagel juts out at a right angle to protect the user's hand. The tang features four rivet holes for attaching a grip of wood or antler. While not specifically for combat, the bauernwehr is certainly intimidating in its size and was also known as a famer's or peasant's sidearm. The surface of this example is covered with a rich russet patina. Size: 15.5" L x 1.375" W (39.4 cm x 3.5 cm)
