Thomas Shadwell was a famous 17th-century English poet who wrote several plays and poems, many of which have been set to a number of songs. This 1720 four-volume printing of the works of Shadwell includes his famous play ‘The Royal Shepherdess’ which was an adaption of John Fountain’s ‘Rewards of Virtue’. According to Lowndes, Shadwell altered the play and simply published under a new title in 1669. Other notable works included in this set include:
