Description
AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART STILL-LIFE, oil on canvas, depicting a group of two plump peaches and three strawberries arranged on a large leaf resting on ground, surrounded by grass, pencil inscriptions to back of stretchers with partially illegible name of "Carrie M [D...?]" and two "Hollis D. Sheler" names. Housed in a period, possibly original gilt-molded frame with fragments of an original art supply label to verso probably for F. Weber & Co. featuring the address of 1125 Chestnut Street Philadelphia. Possibly Pennsylvania. Second half 19th century. 12" x 10" object, 15 1/2" x 13 1/2" OA.
Very good condition with areas of craquelure, a few minute flakes to paint, light yellowing of paint. Frame with wear and losses.
Provenance: The collection of the late Theodore "Ted" and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL.

Catalogue Note: One of the names inscribed on the present lot is likely Hollis Dutt Sheler (1911-2004) of Monroe Co. and Athens, Bradford Co., PA. He and his mother, Susie Dutt (b. 1887), lived with his aunt Carrie M. Dutt (1878-1948) for a period of time, according to the 1920 U.S. Federal Census of Washington Township, Warren Co., NJ and the 1930 U.S. Federal Census of Stroud Township, Monroe Co., PA.
