Description
AMERICAN FOLK ART PAINTED WOODEN MUSIC TEACHER'S TRADE SIGN, period violin suspended from a rectangular single-sided lettered sign with "JOSEPH DONAHUE / TEACHER of VIOLIN" in stenciled white letters on a black schmaltz ground, signed "BROWNE" lower right. Discovered near Hancock, NH. Late 19th/early 20th century. 17" HOA, 24" WOA.
Good overall condition with minor to moderate wear and discoloration to sign, slightly bowed. Violin as-found with wear and losses. Pieces possibly together by association.
Provenance: The collection of the late Theodore "Ted" and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL.

Catalogue Note: Joseph E. Donahue appears in the 1913 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania City Directory with the occupation of Music Teacher, located at 3855 N. Darien. In the 1917 City Directory his address is at Walnut.
