Timothy Washington (born 1946). While studying at Chouinard Art Institute (now Cal Arts) in the 1960s, Washington moved away from his classical training in favor of assemblage using found materials. Since that time his studio practice, like that of his contemporaries David Hammons, Betye Saar, Noah Purifoy and John Outterbridge, has focused on expressing social Black consciousness through objects.
Washington exhibited at the Brockman Gallery and Gallery 52 in Los Angeles in the 1970's and 80’s, two legendary spaces that featured the work of some of the most important black artists in America. Washington’s work was also included in the 1971 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Three Graphic Artists: Charles White, David Hammons, Timothy Washington. In 2014 Washington had his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, Timothy Washington: Love Thy Neighbor at the Los Angeles Craft & Folk Art Museum. In 2019 he had a solo exhibtion Citizen/Ship at the California Afrtican American Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. In 2020 he had a solo exhibition at Salon 94 in New York.
