David Rosen (19121-2004) Born Toronto, studied Cooper Union Art School, NY. In the 1930s, Rosen worked in the mural department of the Federal Arts Project in New York City. There he met Jackson Pollock and Phillip Guston. Together they explored advanced painting techniques at the Siquieros Art Workshop in New York. That studio is now thought to be one of the key spaces where American abstract expressionism emerged from European surrealist automatic drawing.
After World War Two Rosen moved to Los Angeles where he was included in shows at LACMA, the Contemporary Art Gallery in Hollywood, and the Chabot Gallery in West Hollywood. In 1958 he moved to Laguna Beach, where he made his mark, exhibiting frequently for the next 30 years. In the late 1960s, he participated in shows at the now legendary Mystic Fine Art, a small Laguna Beach gallery that was on the vanguard of exploring art and the psychedelic drug experience. This painting was made during that time, and seems to refer with its title and spider web of free painting gestures the holistic oneness associated with psychedelics.
