West Africa, Nigeria/Cameroon border, Chamba, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved anthropomorphic Chamba figure (also Camba, Tshamba, Waschamba) with an elongated torso, a crested head, and stylized features and limbs. The visage presents with circular eyes, a prominent nose between them that continues as a raised crest atop the head, and a petite mouth - all upon a neck that is as long as the head is high. Slender arms run from shoulders to waist, and nipples are delineated on the chest, while knobby knees imply motion. Finally, the surface is covered with an encrusted patina. Chamba figures are very rare and their purpose is not fully understood. One type is believed to serve as a medium for communication with the spirit world. Petite figures have been used to cure snake bites or protect one from snake bites; traditionally, these were attached to iron spikes that were inserted in the earth. Stylistically, Chamba figures are similar to figures created by their neighbors - the Jukun, Mumuye, Montol and Wurkun.
