Description
East Asia, China, Late Ming Dynasty, ca. early to mid-17th century CE. A vibrant blue-on-white porcelain jardiniere with a finely painted jungle motif across its exterior. The center of the painting features a tiger in mid-air, perhaps pouncing on unsuspecting prey below within the bushes. Bamboo trees line the backdrop, and this motif is repeated twice over the vessel's exterior surfaces. The lip is lined with a thick geometric floral border that is paralleled to a linear pattern across its base. During the Ming Dynasty, potters began adding manganese to prevent the cobalt from blurring during firing which made it possible to create more vivid painted motifs. Hence, wares from the Ming Dynasty have come to represent the acme of beautiful blue and white porcelain, the likes of which inspired the adoration of porcelain throughout the world abroad. Size: 7.15" W x 7.25" H (18.2 cm x 18.4 cm)
