Aaron Burr Signed Land Agreement for Peter Stuyvesant
2pp of vellum (front and back), measuring 13.75" x 13.75", New York, dated August 1794 [day cut off]. Boldly signed "Aaron Burr" and countersigned "Jno. Reade", both with a red wax seal. A legal agreement between "Peter Stuyvesant Aaron Burr and John Reade to Gerrit Kettletas." The document states that Stuyvesant, upon accepting £650, discharges a property of 71 square feet on the South Side of Dork Street to the ownership of Gerrit Kettletas. With docketing on verso. The document has flattened folds and additional creasing. Uneven toning and light foxing throughout. Soiling and mounting residue on verso. Uneven vertical edges, resulting in some paper and text loss. Overall very good and boldly signed.
Petrus "Peter" Stuyvesant (1727-1805) was a prominent New York landowner and merchant. He was the namesake of his great-grandfather, Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672), who served as the last Dutch director-general of the colony of New Netherland.
Aaron Burr (1756-1836) served as the country's third U.S. Vice President, under Thomas Jefferson, from 1801 to 1805. Burr was a Revolutionary War veteran, a trained lawyer, and a politician who served as an assemblyman, senator, and attorney general in New York. Unfortunately, Burr's 20-year-long career as a politician and war hero is often overshadowed by two dramatic scandals; the 1804 duel in which he killed Alexander Hamilton, and a series of treason charges leveled against him in 1807. In the years immediately following these scandals, Burr lived in self-imposed exile in England. He finally returned to the United States to undertake a low-profile legal career in 1812.
