Item Details
Description
Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 1189 BCE. A stunning depiction of a priestly figure painted in vibrant polychrome pigment atop a mud brick slab, perhaps from the wall of a tomb. The devout man faces to the left, sits in a red-hued chair, and wears a white-linen vestment as a symbol of religious purity while raising both arms, palms facing outwards, in a gesture of praise, respect, or humility in the presence of a god-king. His clothing is highly detailed with a pleated kilt along the front, lengthy sleeves with pointed lower corners, and a gray semicircular pectoral collar worn around his throat. The minimalist visage is composed with a shaved pate indicate of being a priest, a singular almond-shaped eye with an elongated exterior canthus beneath a thin eyebrow, a petite nose, a rounded chin, and a spiraling ear. The copper-brown skin and white vestment are presented atop a creamy honey-yellow ground that likely filled the background of the entire painted wall. A superb and expertly executed figural painting from the beginning of the 19th Dynasty! Size: 6.75" W x 11.25" H (17.1 cm x 28.6 cm); custom display stand and plexiglass case included.
