Egyptian Third Intermediate Feldspar Heart Scarab
Egyptian Third Intermediate Feldspar Heart Scarab
Item Details
Description
Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, 21st to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 664 BCE. A stupendous heart scarab amulet that is hand-carved from mottled blue-green feldspar with dark green and olive-green inclusions. The topside of the ovoid amulet presents characteristic insectile features such as a folded wing carapace, slender legs tucked beneath the bulky body, and a protruding, semicircular head with a frilled frontal clypeus. Within the clypeus and below are remains of opaque black bitumen which was perhaps added to hold external ornamentation. The planar base of the amulet is uninscribed and exhibits a smooth surface texture. Size: 1.9" L x 1.3" W (4.8 cm x 3.3 cm); 2.625" H (6.7 cm) on included custom stand.

An uninscribed scarab like this would have been placed inside of a mummy's wrappings over its heart, which the ancient Egyptians believed to be the seat of the mind. After death, according to their beliefs, an individual's heart would be weighed against a feather by the jackal god Anubis before a panel of deities who waited at the gateway to the netherworld to judge the dead. If the heart were lighter than a feather, than the deceased could pass into the next life; if not, they would be devoured by the monster Ammit (also Ammut) and cease to exist. Examples of heart scarabs that bear hieroglyphic inscriptions on the base were typically given as highly symbolic gifts to newly married couples.
