About the artist: Born on October 11, 1933 in Sudislavl, Kostroma region in a large family.

In 1947, after finishing seven classes of the Sudislav school, he entered the Kostroma Art School. He studied with Nikolai Pavlovich Shlein, the director of the school. They had to leave school after the second year, as education was paid and there was not enough money to study in the family. At the same time, in 1948-1949, Herman studied at the art studio at the Kostroma Palace of Pioneers (with Alexei Ivanovich Ryabikov [1], Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR).

At the end of 1952, German Komlev was drafted into the Soviet army and served in the Baltic Fleet - he served in the Naval Seamen's Studio at the Seamen's Club in Leningrad. As a serviceman, in the spring of 1956 he married his fellow countrywoman Nina Sergeeva, who lived with her relative in Moscow. Demobilized in 1956, he worked as a graphic designer in a club, moonlighting in newspapers. In 1959, Komlev began to cooperate with Rostorgreklama, Vneshtorgreklama and the Moscow Commercial Advertising Plant, where he created posters, catalogs, brochures, labels and other products. Work in advertising agencies continued until 1975. At the same time, in the mid-1960s, he began to work in the genre of postage miniatures, which became his work until the end of his life.
