Item Details

Description

Made at Springfield as an improved breech loader, these still utilized some left over Civil War parts. The 50/70 caliber trapdoor was the forerunner of famous Model 1873 used by Custer's boys. VG cond. Lock is an 1863 dated Civil War Springfield musket lock. The breech block is dated 1870 over an eagle's head over letters US. Barrel and receiver are numbered 39,001. Bore is excellent. 100% original. 100% complete, and mechanically perfect.

52,000 of these rifles were produced in 1869 and 1870. Production peaks were in the October 1869, through June 1870, period. The M68 was Springfield's first attempt at using a separate receiver and in some cases new 32.6" barrels. The shorter length barrel eliminated the need for the middle band we see on the earlier Allin conversions of 3-band rifle muskets. The sling swivel was now attached to the upper band. Rear sight is the proper leaf sight having a maximum range of 900 yards.

M68 breech blocks are dated with the year of manufacture : 1868, 1869 or 1870. However, very few rifles were produced in 1868, so the 1868 breech block is extremely rare.
