Description
MARCUS AURELIUS, Emperor of Rome. The meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus the Roman emperor, concerning himself. Treating of a natural man's happiness: wherein it consisteth, and of the means to attain unto it. Translated out of the original Greek; with notes: by Meric Casaubon, D.D. The fifth edition. To which is added, the life of Antoninus: with some select remarks upon the whole. By Monsieur and Madam Dacier. Never before in English. London: A. and John Churchill, 1692. Octavo. (6 9/16 x 4 1/4 inches). Engraved portrait frontispiece. [16], 243, [1], 67, [1], xxxii, 127, [1], 102, [10]pp. Contemporary panelled calf, metal hinge and clasp, front and rear cover detached, later marbled endpapers and edges. Joseph Tasker (bookplate); Hamilton Vogdes (bookplate). Later edition of Casaubon's translation of Marcus Aurelius. This edition was originally published in 1634 and was reprinted many times due to its enduring popularity. The charitable-sociable Stoicism of Casaubon's Marcus Aurelius appealed to a peaceful cosmic holism and rational moral duty in urging the pious conformity widely praised by Stuart advocates of the established church (Barbour, English Epicures and Stoics, p. 195). ESTC R22935; Wing A4230.
