Description
CRUIKSHANK, George (1792-1878). [Large group of clipped etchings]. Published by the artist, 1827-1828. (Various sizes). Approx. 69 etchings. A collection of etchings from the noted British caricaturist. George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator who made illustrations for many authors, including Charles Dickens. His father, Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s, and Cruikshank started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant. The junior Cruikshank's early career was renowned in popular publications for his political and social caricatures of English life. In 1823, at the age of 31, he started to focus more on book illustration, and in the 1840s, he shifted further away to creating illustrations in support of the temperance and anti-smoking movement, eventually becoming the vice president of the National Temperance League in 1856. In his lifetime, he created nearly 10,000 prints, illustrations, and plates.
