(9 1/2 x 7 inches). 121pp. First edition, one of 300 numbered copies on BFK vellum justified by Jacques Schiffrin. Printers wrappers, housed in cloth-backed and cloth-edged slipcase. Illustrated book of 15 original etchings and 7 color woodcuts by Alexandre Alexeïeff. André Maurois (born Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog) was a French author. During World War I, he joined the French army and served as an interpreter and later a liaison officer with the British army. His first novel, Les silences du colonel Bramble, was a witty and socially realistic account of that experience. It was an immediate success in France. In 1938, Maurois was elected to the prestigious Académie française.Alexandre Alexeieff (1901-1982) was a prolific Russian-born illustrator and filmmaker. Alexeieff emigrated to France after the Russian Revolution, where he began his career as an artist. Along with illustrating over 40 books, he and his wife invented a novel animation technique known as pinscreen.
