Description
ERAGNY PRESS - Lucien PISSARRO (1863-1944). C'est D'Aucassin et de Nicolete. London: The Eragny Press, 1903. Octavo. (8 7/16 x 5 3/4 inches). Printed in red and black. Wood-engraved frontispiece printed in colours, designed and engraved by Lucien Pissarro. 55pp, [3]. Original floral patterned-paper boards. Uncut. One of 230 copies, of which 200 were for sale. Lucien Pissarro was a French artist and book illustrator who worked in Paris before moving to England in 1890, where he found an audience for his wood-engraving and print-making techniques. In London, he met Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon, who were producing a magazine called The Dial, and made illustrations for them before branching out and establishing The Eragny Press with his wife, Camille, in 1894.This book was the last to be printed by the Pissarros in the Press's Vale type, a typeface designed by Ricketts for books published by The Vale Press under the imprint of Hacon and Ricketts. However, in 1903, Ricketts closed The Vale Press, and the punches and matrices for the typefaces were thrown into the Thames, while the type itself was melted down in 1904 after the publication of The Vale Press's final book. Ransom, Eragny 15; Tomkinson, Eragny 16.
