Description
Fatma Shanan (b. 1986)
Untitled
Signed and dated 2014 on the reverse
Oil on canvas
39 1/2 x 59 inches
Unframed
Concealed within the weave of a carpet are secrets, processes, and events. It is a signifier of local identity, which represents connections between nature, geography, and culture. For Fatma Shanan, who was born and raised in the Druze village of Julis, a carpet is before all else a home (Carmit Blumensohn, Fatma Shanan, A Single Continuum, p. 98).
In this monumental and important work from 2014, carpets and fields are one. Carpet's have been a central theme in Shanan's work. They are inextricably woven into a life of hospitality, ritual, domesticity, multi-culturalism, ornament, craft, and community. They are passed from generation to generation; and when they become worn, they are carried up to the flat roofs of houses for sleeping outdoors on hot summer evenings. Other carpets are piled in the fields, for a resting place during harvest time.
