Randolph Coats Biography (from the FineEstateArt.com site)
Randolph Lasalle Coats (1891-1957) was born in Richmond, Indiana. He attended the Herron School of Art under William Forsyth and the Cincinnati Adademy of Fine Arts under Frank Duveneck and James R. Hopkins, later studying independently in Europe.
Coats was a well-known portrait and figure painter. He was commissioned to paint Governor SchrickerÂ’s second term portrait and Governor Ralph GatesÂ’ portrait for the collection.
He also performed an extensive restoration project on 36 of the other Governors’ portraits in 1953. He was the author and producer of the film documentary “One Hundred Years of Art and Artists of Indiana” and his art colony on Cape Ann was responsible for Coats making the film “New England Art Colonies”.
He was a member of the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Masonic Lodge, Chicago Art Galleries, and the Cincinnati Art club. Some of his many awards include Tri Kappa awards at the Hoosier Salon, an Indianapolis Art Association Award, and he is represented in many public and private collections.
