GUILLAUME DE LISLE (French 1675-1726) AN ANTIQUE MAP, "Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississippi," AMSTERDAM, CIRCA 1730, hand colored copperplate engraving on paper, "Dressée sur un grand nombre de Mémoires entr'autres sur ceux de Mr. le Maire par Guillaume De L'Isle de l'Académie Rle. des Sciences," printed from the second edition of Guillaume De L'Isle's map, published by Johannes Covens (1697-1774) and Cornelis Mortier (1661-1711), showing indigenous inhabitation and hostile/disruptive indigenous presence on known routes, destroyed/lost tribes, major rivers, routes of de Soto, S. Denis, M. Cavalier, and de Mocoso, sheet: 21" x 25 3/4", plate: 18" x 23 3/4". Note: Guillaume De L'Isle (1675-1726) French Royal cartographer to Louis XIV, King of France. The present map for the first time mentions the "Mission de los Teijas Established in 1716," effectively the first map to name Texas. Provenance: Property from a Corporate Collection, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Some stains, toning, tears, repairs, mounted to board, fading of hand color, overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
