Following Stephens' publication of Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan in 1841, he set out to undertake a more concentrated examination of the latter region, resulting in the present work.
Like his previous effort, the most remarkable aspect of the work is the important series of drawings made by the artist Frederick Catherwood, revealing to the world's eyes the wondrous architecture, statuary, idols, tablets, bas reliefs, and other creations of the ancient Mayan civilization.
