Description
Reliquary. Córdoba, first half of the 18th century.Showcase in gilded wood, with a relic in a silver case and inside a glass tear box with ampoule and sealed Papa bull of Bishop Antonio Caballero y Góngora.Measurements: 54 x 31 x 18 cm.Baroque showcase made of carved wood, molded and finally gilded, in the form of a chest. It rises on an octagonal base carved with foliated motifs, on which rests the main body, with baroque motifs and windows that allow viewing the interior, intended to house the reliquary. Of great decorativism, the top is topped with a papal tiara, crowned in turn by a Latin cross. The reliquary itself is conceived as a silver case resting on an octagonal wooden base, which contains inside a glass ampoule-shaped lachrymarium (with a broken mouth) and the sealed bull of Bishop Antonio Caballero y Góngora, written in Latin. The word bula comes from the Latin bulla, a term that refers to any artificial round object, and was originally used to refer to the medal worn around the neck, in Ancient Rome, by the sons of noble families until they wore the toga. In the most important matters, following a practice of the Byzantine Empire, the seal was made of gold (golden bull).
