Northern Europe, Denmark, ca. 19th century CE. A hand forged iron spear head, comprised of four flat prongs with serrated edges on the interior peripheries. The prongs connect to a thin neck above a wide sheet hammered so the edges almost meet to form a socket. The surface has developed a heavy dark brown and black patina. This iron tool looks aggressive, but it was not for warfare or torture, but rahter was a spear for eel fishing. The spear was used in a sweeping motion that cut across the current, and the serrations caught the eels. This certainly is an interesting piece of 19th c. Danish fishing tackle! Size: 17.5" L x 5.75" W (44.4 cm x 14.6 cm)
