Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A handsome carved-wood loom stick boasting a lengthy, slender body that gently curves to a tapered point at one end and is topped by a finial in the form of a monkey at the other. The lovely seated simian is positioned with both knees bent and both hands on his round head, which faces upwards. His sinuous tail curls into itself along the top of the implement. Monkeys have always fascinated humankind, with their zany antics that seem to mirror and at times parody humans. Understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural. Boasting a natural woodgrain surface in hues of caramel and chocolate brown, this ancient tool aided in evenly spacing and tightening the many thread strands used to make textiles. Size: 0.875" W x 16.125" H (2.2 cm x 41 cm); 16.5" H (41.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Denenberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, California, USA

Condition
Finial has been repaired from at least three pieces and has visible break lines. Some soft abrasions to finial, as well as expected surface wear to body, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, very nice with light patina.
