Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 550 to 100 BCE; Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fabulous collection of 23 hand-built pottery heads and busts from both Michoacan and Chupicuaro cultures. Each head has a highly-stylized visage with round mouths, petite noses, and eyes boasting either dot-form or impressed pupils. Many of the heads have details highlighted with either red or white pigment and are imbued with a classic presentation evocative of ancient West Mexico! Mounted atop a fabric-lined panel inside a frame. Size of largest (middle): 2.9" W x 2.6" H (7.4 cm x 6.6 cm); size (frame): 19" W x 13" H (48.3 cm x 33 cm).

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away., acquired at Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA, in collaboration with the Sam Walton Family, The University of Arkansas, and the City of Fayetteville, acquired from J.F. Starr in 1968

All heads are fragments of larger objects. Each head has small chips along neck line, minor abrasions, and fading to pigmentation where applicable. Light earthen deposits and manganese blooms throughout.
