Ancient Central Europe, Germany and Austria, Danube River Basin, Hallstatt culture, ca. 8th to 6th century BCE. A beautiful bronze necklace known as a torq (also torc) of a circular form with thick terminals accentuated with dozens of incised striations. The main body is twisted to form several decorative grooves that stretch between the terminals, and the entire accessory is enveloped with lustrous forest green patina. Interestingly torcs were often worn as permanent adornments and status symbols that were rarely taken off by the wearer. Size: 5" Diameter (12.7 cm); (opening between terminals): 0.3" W (0.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
