Description
Eastern Europe, Neolithic Period, ca. late 4th to early 3rd millennium BCE. A hand-built ceramic vase with a flat base, gradually-widening walls, a rounded shoulder with a pair of loop lug handles, and a wide mouth with a flared rim. The shoulder is decorated with applied brown pigment in vertical sections of parallel lines, with thin horizontal brown stripes enclosing the register, and all atop a beige ground. This simple utilitarian form was used for storing either liquids, foodstuffs, or perhaps human remains. Size: 6.5" W x 6.625" H (16.5 cm x 16.8 cm).

Condition
Vessel repaired from dozens of large pieces with some areas of restoration and resurfacing, overpainting, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use, small nicks to rim, handles, shoulder, body, and base, with fading to pigmentation, and light roughness across most surfaces. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
