Description
Yoshiiku Utagawa (1833-1904), lot of 4 shinbun nishiki-e woodblock prints, Tokyo Nichinichi Newspaper, 1870s, 35X23 cm, signed. Poor condition (holes, small missing parts, slight stains, wear and tear to edges).Newspaper prints, also called shinbun nishiki-e were a rather special and short-lived new genre of Japanese woodblock prints during the 1870s and 1880s. They were made by renowned ukiyo-e artists and featured primarily spectacular crimes, gossip stories, disasters, and - something typical Japanese - stories of supernatural appearances of ghosts.Provenance: Prof. Avraham Altman collection. Our sincere thanks to lida Ken'ichiro for his kind help with Japanese translations
