BIOGRAPHY:
David Emile De Noter was a son and student of Jan-Baptist De Noter, draftsman and architect. His mother was Carola Maya with whom Jan-Baptist married just shortly before David's birth in 1818. He had a brother Michael who lived only a short time (1821-1823) and two sisters, Anne-Marie and Edalie.De Noter went to live in Brussels in 1840.He married Clemence Wauters on 25 November 1845 in Mechelen.De Noter lived in Paris in the 1860s. He would have shared a studio there for a while with J. Goupil (ca. 1864). Over time, De Noter and his family moved to Algiers in North Africa. He gifted the Algiers museum in 1870 with a floral still life. Ca. 1879 his address was: Le Nador, near Marengo. He painted still lifes with flowers, vegetables, seafood, dead game and poultry and fruit, but also kitchen and salon interiors and genre scenes, almost always with a strong focus on a still life element within the scene. De Noter painted in a meticulously realistic style but with a distinctly romantic atmosphere. During his later years, when he lived in Algiers, he also painted faces there, such as the Kashba of Algiers. In a few paintings he collaborated with Henri Leys, G. Koller, Louis Tuerlinckx and with Alfred Stevens. His works still score high on the art market.
