Description
C. Alan Johnson (active/lived in Alaska, 1926-2013). Signed beneath the hem of her dress, a hand-painted ceramic figure of an Inuit female entitled "Rachel" by artist C. Alan (Bud)Johnson, ca. 1962. Rachel wears a red and white floral dress with a fur collar as well as a drop waistband and sleeve cuffs presenting a design comprised of nested red and black hemispheric motifs. She appears to be of advanced age with grey hair and wrinkles, and her visage is cheerful and expressive. An endearing elder who is happily holding a catch of not one, but two fish in her right hand! Size: 3.25" L x 2.25" W x 6.875" H (8.3 cm x 5.7 cm x 17.5 cm)
According to the Anchorage Daily News, "Alan was a talented sculptor and watercolorist and the designer of the much loved Alaska figurines. With his artist wife, he co-founded the C. Alan Johnson Co. in 1958. They produced artwork for 48 years, until 2006, when he retired at the age of 80 and they closed the business. He completed his last painting in 2010 which depicts the FV Thelma C, a historic Alaska salmon fishing boat." (Anchorage Daily News, March 26-April 1, 2013)

Collection label on back. "C. Alan / Johnson / 1962 / TII" written under dress. Barely distinguishable abraded area to top of head. Otherwise, intact and excellent.
