Description
Painting of three figures by Herman and Estelle Goodman, 1964
Painting: 30" x 24"
Davids notes: Estelle Goodman(American 20th century),exhibited in the National Arts and Antiques Show in Oct of 1970, attended Barnard College, and was a member of the Artist Craftsman Guild. She had a retrospective show at the Elaine Kaufmann Cultural Center in 1993,New York City. Goodmans paintings bridge that transition from the tragic German Expressionism styles of WW2 to the self absorbed meditative styles of the Abstract Expressionists that were emerging from the Rothko and DeKooning schools of thought.
The figures in her paintings often appear as crazed New Yorkers, apparitions or ghosts, and the overall affect is of insanity, chaos and confusion. This painting is no exception; it shows three figures standing in front of what is probably a NYC landscape, with a maniacal look upon their faces, and strange posturing to their stance. They appear to be holding something, maybe a flower.
When Herbert(Estelles husband, also an artist) and Estelle collaborated on a painting it is signed H.E.Goodman, as is this one.
I recommend anyone buying Estelle Goodmans paintings from our gallery invest in a light cleaning by a competent restorer. They appear not to have been restored or cleaned in 40 to 50 years.
