Description
Chinese black lacquer & gilt bed,c1880-1910.
H: 34" x W: 83" x D: 58.5"
Davids notes: Probably made around 1900-1910, the decoration on the back and sides is very fine. The lacquer work, gilding, and deep carving is beautifully done, and in good condition. there is some cracking on the side in back were the side panel fits into the back(the back and sides are easily removeable). There are two long screws in back, one screw is missing the nut.
Originally made as 'opium beds' these works of art eventually became exotic sofas in the West. The origin of the furniture was clear, after the Dutch and English introduced opium to the Chinese, sailors and Western visitors entering Chinese businesses would often be led to a back room where they could smoke opium. The rumor developed that nice people would often wake up robbed of their money after an opium coma, hence the term, being 'Shanghaied". There are two such beds in our sale, one is lot 27 and the other is lot 24.
Note: Anyone purchasing this bed must make arrangements to remove it in four days. Thursday May 20th is the deadline. Friday May 21st the bed must be gone from the gallery.
