Rene Gagnon Autograph Letter Twice-signed During WWII
Rene Gagnon autograph letter twice-signed during WWII. In this letter to his girlfriend Pauline Harnois, the future Iwo Jima hero writes about his new assignment as Naval Prison guard in Charleston, South Carolina and draws a sketch of himself holding a baton to guard a military prisoner. Dated 27 July 1943, letter reads in part, "…all I got to do is watch the prisoners. This place is heaven compared to what I had before…don't forget we're getting married as soon as the war is over, and from the looks of things now, it won't be long…Rene". Letter on U.S. Marines stationery runs 4pp. on two sheets measuring 6.75" x 10.5". Accompanied by mailing envelope also signed by Gagnon. Some discoloring on edges, else near fine.
