Description
English, 18th-late 19th century. Chippendale mahogany tea caddy with ogee form and feet. Brass escutcheon and bale handle. Divided interior. Refinished, replaced hinges, feet most likely well done replacements. 7"h. 10"w. 8"d., a salt glaze chocolate pot with scroll decoration and lion head and paw feet. Repaired spout and lid, 6"h. Ex Root Collection (Chicago), ex Samuel Herrup (Massachusetts), and a small brass taper stick with threaded post. Loss. 4"h. Together with a small traveling desk set in fitted box with faux shagreen covering. White metal fountain pen with multiple nibs, onyx wax seal and three glass containers including one inkwell and sander. Some damage. Leather container. 2.5"h. 3"w.
Condition
As catalogued with a small triangular patch on the left top side of lid, minor nick in front edge and a slight irregular area of varnish. Late, heavy refinishing, latch has heavy rust while rest of lock doesn't (replacement/enhanced?). Replaced green felt lining on lid interior. The refinishing seems to have involved a lot of sanding especially the bottom and feet. However, there are odd areas of dark stain on the feet, leading to my belief that the feet are replaced even though they look good from the outside edges.
