Description
The artist, who was born in Austrian Silesia, was a student at the Vienna Academy. He traveled to Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, where he found motifs for his landscapes and cityscapes. He particularly enjoyed painting views of Venice. The artist captured Venice on a wet day, as shown by the puddles and the wet pavement on the quay, which extends downward from the right in front. It is the busy Riva degli Schiavoni. The buildings show the typical Venetian Gothic style. A boat is anchored in the foreground. Its shape and dark color create an exciting contrast to the delicate architecture. Right in the center of the picture, the small campanile of San Marco rises in the distance. To the left of it, the domes of Santa Maria della Salute appear in the haze. Far-left in the distance, you can still see the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The painting is not an exact vedute but rather takes artistic liberties. There weren't many quaint Gothic houses there. Oil on canvas, 68 x 105 cm
