Description
The Volume being offered at Auction was a hand scribed record of events at Manor of Melford including the personal Will of Sir William Cordell and many other documents, indentures, logs and records some dating back to the 1500’s. The Volume contains two colored illuminations 1) Family lineage Tree, 2) Sir William Cordell’s Coat of Arms.
The Manor of Melford was given to the Abbey of St. Edmundsbury by Earl Aflric in ca. 1050.[3] The village is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 which lists the manor of Long Melford as an estate of 600 hectares. Following the dissolution of the Monasteries, Henry VIII granted the manor to Sir William Cordell Sir William Cordell (1522–1581) was Solicitor General and Master of the Rolls during the reign of Queen Mary I and Speaker of the House of Commons during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Solicitor General to Mary I 1553, Master of the Rolls and a member of the privy council 1557, sat in five parliamements between 1545 and 1571, Speaker of the House of Commons 1558, executor to Queen Mary I, Cardinal Pole, and Archbishop Parker, founded a hospital; the Holy Trinity at Long Melford,[2] first visitor and supporter of the foundation of St John's College, Oxford, Cordell married Mary Clopton (d. 1584), the daughter of Richard Clopton of Groton.
