Item Details
Description

Title: Antique 1869 Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Woodblock Print Tryptic Hideyoshi Ukiyo-e
Description: This is a beautiful antique ukiyo-e print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who was one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. The piece is called A Record of the Advancement of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and was created in 1869. Hideyoshi was at one point one of the most powerful men in Japan and served as retainer to the daimyo Oda Nobunaga. The print shows Hideyoshi with 3 year old Prince Samboshi on his shoulder after the death of Nobunaga, his grandfather. Hideyoshi supported Prince Samboshi in the struggle for power after Nobunaga’s death. This event took place at Daitokuji Temple. There are red and yellow cartouches throughout the print which probably display the names of prominent people in attendance. The title and inscription are in the top right corner of the images.
Signed: Bottom right corner, Yoshitoshi. Publisher seal on bottom right side of center print, Manya Sobei.
Circa: 1869
Dimensions: Entire image approx. 14x30 inches.
Condition: Some toning and fading in the prints, although most colors are very vivid and bright. Some insect damage and pinholes, a rip in the lower right side. Mounted to antique period backing paper, which has come detached in some places. Light creases.
Provenance: From the estate of a local retiree, whose grandfather collected Ukiyo-e prints throughout the 1930s.
Shipping: 20x14x6, 1 lb.
