Drawn to the excitement of the Russian Revolution, he returned to Russia in 1914 and founded the Constructionist School in 1917. After two years of intense controversy and artistic conflict, Chagall returned to a dreamy fairy tale art form that is the modern forerunner of Traditional Surrealism.
