Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji period, ca. 19th century. A fine pair of wooden candlesticks known as shokudai with circular, flower-form bases, long necks that are octagonal at the bottom and tubular at the top, and hemispherical iron copper alloy caps with undulating peripheries topped with flat copper tops and circular brass candle-holders. Each cap is beautifully carved with an undulating periphery. A lustrous shade of dark brown envelops the exterior of both examples. Size: 7.5" in diameter x 26" H (19 cm x 66 cm)

Nicks/chips and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age and use. Rich patina on brass. Excellent and intact with nice remaining pigments and lovely wax deposits.
