Title: Uncommon map of Texas – Mitchell/Butler 1868

Description: "Copperplate engraved map from Mitchell’s New Reference Atlas, a somewhat elusive school geography. Published by E. H. Butler in 1868. The map was colored using an unusual coloring process--the state was rendered in light blue hand coloring while the county boundaries were printed in dark green. Shows the meandering national mail route from Sherman to Gainesville to Fort Belknap to Ft. Phantom Hill (Shackleford County) to Ft. Chadbourne (Runnels County) through ""Comanche and Lipans"" and then north and west through New Mexico to El Paso. Inset of the Pan Handle shows the road from Santa Fe to Fort Smith, Arkansas. Map locates over a dozen western forts and notes the locations of the battles of San Jacinto (1836), Palo Alto (1846) and Resaca de La Palma (1846). Nice specimen with very light and small stains in lower corners. 8.125 x 10.75"
