Historic Maps
(1753) Rare First Printing Antique Map titled "A MAP OF PHILADELPHIA and Parts Adjacent" by N. Scull & G. Heap
(August 1753) Rare Colonial Era First Printing Antique Map titled, "A MAP OF PHILADELPHIA and Parts Adjacent", by N. Scull & G. Heap, Very Fine.
This First Issue edition of the Scull & Heap Map of Philadelphia measures 13.25" x 11.75" (by sight) and 15.5" x 12.5" overall. It was published as a foldout Map in the August 1753 edition of the Gentleman's Magazine, in London. It is considered the most famous Colonial Map of Philadelphia. The very first edition, separately issued in Philadelphia, is extremely rare; this Gentleman's Magazine edition is the first generally available version of this important map. This rare example of the map was reissued in a later edition, without the table of distances as seen printed here on the lower right side. The Holme's engraved "Grid Plan" for the city lies at the center of this map, with an open Centre Square and the Court House the only indicated features. More information is given about the surrounding regions, where roads, mills, and houses of prominent citizens are shown and named. These details give us significant information about the development of the Philadelphia area in its early days. Especially of interest is a considerably developed Germantown, with houses shown lining both sides of the Germantown Pike. Well printed on fine quality laid paper there are some normal folds with no separation or pinholes. About 8" of the lower right outer edge margin paper has a replacement from where the map was cut out of the magazine for evenness. This important historical map of Philadelphia is ready for framing and display.
