1880s Handcarved Painted African-American Bottle Stopper
c. 1880’s Late 19th Century, Figural Ethnocentric African-American Head, Hand-Carved and Painted Wood Bottle Stopper with Actual Hair attached, Choice Very Fine.
This unique Handcrafted Bottle Stopper in Folk Art style measures 3.75” tall and features an artistic Hand-carved and Painted face and head of a likely African-American’s male. The fleshtone is darker than as lighted perhaps suggesting a mixed heritage, but you can determine what you think. It is what it is and a matter of opinion. Definitely ethnocentric, evaluating other peoples and cultures according to the standards of one's own culture in its detail. The most interesting aspect of this artwork is that Actual Black Hair has been attached to the back of the head in a long queue, then painted black to match. Apart from some light chipping on some of the high points likely from actual use (nose and ears), the condition is bright and remarkable. Easily one of the most unusual Black History and/or Ethnocentric related artwork items, that is likely unique, we have offered.
