1885-Dated, First Edition, Two Excellent Scarce Works On, "The Dedication of the Washington National Monument" and "Oration on the Completion of the National Monument of Washington," One Inscribed & Signed by author Robert C. Winthrop, both Very Fine.
1885-Dated, Two wonderful timely First Edition Works, Including:
1. "The Dedication of the Washington National Monument, with the Orations by Hon. Robert C. Winthrop and Hon. John W. Daniel, February 21, 1885." Published by Order of Congress, Washington, Government Printing Office. Hardcover, 7.25" x 10.5", 122 pages. Gilt title on cover, tears to end papers and frontispiece tissue barrier.
2. Inscribed & Signed by author Robert C. Winthrop, "Oration on the Completion of the National Monument to Washington, February 21, 1885. By Hon. Robert C. Winthrop." Boston, Little, Brown and Company, with paper wraps, 6" x 9.5", 39 original untrimmed pages. Here, author Winthrop Inscribes and Signs on the Cover, to: "Arthur B. Ellis, Esq with the kind regards of Rob. C. Winthrop". Certainly very rare as such. (2 items).
The Washington Monument, designed by Robert Mills and eventually completed by Thomas Casey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, honors and memorializes George Washington at the center of the nation's capital. The structure was completed in two phases of construction, one private (1848-1854) and one public (1876-1884). Dedicated in 1885.
