This Vintage 1:48 Scale Sundowner F-18 Tomcat Model is in excellent condition. No missing parts or decals. It makes a striking display item and for anyone who was on the Independence or flew in the Sundowner fighter squadron would be a great present. A little history: This model represents the Fighter Squadron 111 (VF-111), also known as the Sundowners, was a fighter squadron of the United States Navy. Originally established as Attack Squadron 156 (VA-156) on 4 June 1956, it was redesignated VF-111 on 20 January 1959, the day after the original VF-111 was disestablished. The squadron was redesignated VF-26 on 1 September 1964, redesignated as VF-111 on 17 September 1964 and disestablished on 31 March 1995. This model represents the F-18 that were on the USS Independence. The carrier USS Independence was commissioned in 1959 and, “during its lifecycle, the ship made one tour off the coast of Vietnam in 1965, carried out airstrikes against Syrian forces during the Lebanese Civil War and enforced the no-fly zone over southern Iraq as part of Operation Southern Watch”
