Item Details
Description
Grant Wood (1891-1942) - Farm Landscape, 1932, Large original drawing study for "Farm Landscape" a study for the oil painting in the Coe College collection, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, illustrated in "Grant Wood The Regionalist Vision" by Wanda M. Corn page 96, Plate 122. Drawing is 24-15/16" x 46-1/4" paper size. Mixed media on brown kraft paper laid down on cardboard. White colored pencil, white conte crayon, graphite and charcoal. Signed and dated lower right corner inside the white colored farm road "Grant Wood 1932" in Wood's usual block capital letters. Published in Western Art Collector, May 2021 issue, page 2. Published in American Fine Art magazine, May/June 2021 issue, page 17. Provenance: Frey Collection California/Iowa. Description: Classic Grant Wood imagery depicting checked plating of corn similarly seen in Wood's lithograph "Fertility." The rows of corn present an ordered vista along perspective lines. This orderly grid is a hallmark of Wood's and is filled with harvested shocks of pyramidal corn juxtaposed against an Iowa farmhouse, barns and windmills. This is a working drawing in which Wood visualized and decided upon the major aspects of his final, painted image while at the same time retaining much of the immediacy in the variety of marks and is done in Wood's principle of thirds. Small graphite crosses and horizontal orange conte line marks are faintly visible near the center of the drawing where the artist helped grid the drawing out. The drawing is similar in size to the oil painting. "Farm Landscape," which was originally part of a mural cycle, "The Fruits of Iowa," in the Montrose Hotel at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Both the drawing and the hotel paintings are dated 1932. The hotel was sold in 1956 and the paintings passed into the care of Coe College as a loan. The Eugene C. Eppley Foundation made the gift of the paintings to Coe in 1976, designating the college as the home of all seven of the Montrose Hotel paintings. This rare Wood drawing we are offering for sale is not out of the Coe College collection but from the private Frey collection, where it has been for the last forty years.
